My favorite site
Prior to the late eighteenth century, the amount of time humans spent creating clothing is staggering. A significant portion of life was spent creating items that today are available in massive quantities
Clothing and Culture (before factories)
Grow and Bundle the Flax (or cotton, silk, or other textile)
Break the flax to prepare for spinning
Twist: Walking Wheel or Treadle Wheel?
Create Cloth on the Loom
Cut the cloth to patterns
Sew into shirts, skirts, socks, pants.......
Then the Industrial Revolution
Slater's Mill
in the 1790s, Samuel Slater smuggled the plans for the textile mill in his mind out of Britain (earning him the nickname "Slater the Traitor" and brought the textile revolution to the United States.
David Wilkinson built a machine mill next to Slater's textile mill. Both were powered by the Blackstone River.
Wilkinson Mill
The wheel, powered by the Blackstone River, drives the main shaft which provides power to the belts which......
turn the machines.
