According to the docent at the Vanderbilt Mansions, the Vanderbilts collectively owned over 40 homes. When they moved (often due to weather preferences) to another of their many palatial estates, the staff stayed and maintained the residences in perfect order. The opulence and costs of running mansions in their absence was enormous and perhaps one of the the greatest illustrations of why the "Gilded Age" was so named.
